The Mexican holiday Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated throughout Mexico. November 1st is a wonderful time to visit this nation to marvel at the respect and splendor descendants show to their beloved, deceased ancestors in the community cemeteries. It is a day for the living family and friends to renew their respect and love for the deceased. By gathering to pray for and remember them and participate in their spiritual pilgrimage, the spirits of their dead are kept alive among their living
descendants
.
Adrian Corona Trillo
is one of the masters in depictions of this Day. He has transformed images of dead to those of living souls, where they experience everything we the living love. The joy and and whimsy are so evident in his depictions. A man on one knee pays homage at the headstone of a departed friend
. A couple dance while musicians play.
The flow of movement in the womans clothing is so real one can almost feel the breeze created from its swaying. Two of three musicians, a guitarist and a
bassist,
play respectfully, sharing their music with the dearly departed while the third musician conjures magical notes out of his
saxophone
.
There are also birds flying in the sky.
The trees are bare and show it is in fact early winter.
As an homage to his fellow artisans, S
eñor Trillo has placed the names of actual deceased residence of Mata Ortiz on the headstones. With 'Descanse en Pas' ('Rest In Peace' / 'DEP') & 'INRI' engravings, we are brought to the strength of love and reverence by our Latin cousins for their deceased family and friends. As a final effect of his artistic abilities,
S
eñor Trillo utilizes the style of sgraffito, a design method going back thousands of years around the world. Images are created by etching through the glaze to the underlying clay. The remaining glaze is now a scene of life and activity. This method demands a great commitment to time and is very difficult to achieve.

Mata Ortiz is legendary, both the village and the pottery taking it's name.
In the 70's a young man began experimenting with recreating ancient pottery he would come across. He used the same clay sand mixtures from materials found in the area in which the ancients lived and made their pottery. The same firing techniques using the same local materials eventually created the same magnificent results. Half a century later and much of the village of Mata Ortiz has taken on these incredible skills for creating masterpieces, with each artist contributing hers and his own sense of beauty.
The designs are bold, earthy and individualistic.
Paint brushes consisting of one or two human hairs create the finest lines. Images revealed through carvings are created by nearly microscopic sharpened points. Paints are developed from minerals found in the surrounding desert. Many colors are only revealed after intense firing at very high temperatures. These creations are truly unique transformations that only this small little region of the world can create from it's own soil.
I have been tangentially around Mata Ortiz for 30 years. Now I am spiritually bound by their overwhelming beauty and intense and intricate designs. When I look at one of the pieces, I feel I am meeting in person the artists who created this, and am visiting their home. I have recently also become the largest and most trusted seller of Mata Ortiz on eBay!
This pot is signed its creator,
Adrian Corona Trillo
